Make the most of living and working in Denmark

I need to get a Danish drivers license, but am confused about what is required. I have a US license, which they may take away? (How do I get it back?) I hear that I need a doctor's exam, and then to take driving lessons with a private company, then take both a theoretical and practical driving test. Can anyone give me more details about what is required? Also, do I get a temporary license first, and if so is it from the kommune or police?

Thanks.

I would add two things:

1. As a foreign student and temporarly visa holders in Denmark, you don't need to convert your license into DK's license, even if you have CPR card. I confirmed this from Østjylland Politi's Kørekort department in 2007. I don't know if the law has been changed recently.

2. The law is only applicable to long term residents specially who have got permanent jobs or have residence permit status which is likely to be permanent.

Thanks.

Thanks for this very detailed post.
I am looking forward to going through this procedure in order to get a driver's license. I would be starting from scratch, as my previous driver's license has expired and I want to apply for a new one from the Danish State.
Are there any recommendations on the driving schools for non-Danish speakers? I have come across many advertisements, but the prices are varying so much among them that it gets me confused as to how to identify which one would be a good one.
If anyone has information about any good driving schools, please reply to my message.
Please also let me know the range of expenditure we are looking at here when applying for a driver's license in Denmark.

Thanks in advance,
Rajesh.
