Courses in English for the expanding family
Expecting a baby? Or just had one? And feeling a bit alone amidst all Danish speaking people? Join fellow English speaking families for subsidised classes in the centre of Copenhagen.
As a foreigner, far away from family and old friends, having a baby can feel like a bit of a lonely affair. Furthermore, the vast majority of preparatory classes for expecting parents are in Danish only. Not so at ”Familieskolen”, however. Here, English speaking families have for some ten years been offered a wide selection of courses related to pregnancy, birth and parenting. The instructors are, of course, all highly qualified.
Covering topics ranging from pregnancy yoga to ChiBall for mothers and babies, Familieskolen offers courses starting all year round.
Besides the topics already mentioned, as of January of 2010 it's possible to participate in classes such as Babybics (excercises for mums and babies) and antenatal classes (for two adults). The classes are offered both during the day and at night in order to accomodate various schedules.
As the Danish authorities subsidise such education, the price per participant is generally very affordable. Antenatal classes, for instance, which take place five times of three hours each time, cost approximately 750 kr. per person altogether.
As they teach new skills and spread valuable knowledge, all of Familieskolen's courses are obviously valuable, and particularly so for people with limited social networks in Denmark and little knowledge of Danish. They find that the courses in English enhance their confidence as they enter important new phases of their lives and also give them the opportunity to share feelings and experiences with others in the similar situations.
