Life in Denmark

Make the most of living and working in Denmark

Our members would like to learn more about opportunities to play sport.

If you know sports clubs or local sports centers that are keen to encourage Expats, please tell us about it by making a contribution to this discussion.

We are looking for lots of opportunites for expats to keep up their sporting interests and meet new people (especially Danes).

Even better if you have suggestions for cities and areas outside of Copenhagen.

Regards,

Skip Bowman

Yoga in English

Yoga is great for one's body, sould and mind! There are number of opportunities to take yoga classes at various levels in English in Copenhagen. For example, check out these yoga centers for more information:

Natha yoga center: http://www.natha.dk/

This school offers hatha yoga classes in Norrebro and by the lakes in Osterbro. Also drop-in yoga.

Astanga yoga school: http://www.astanga.dk/english/index.asp

The center is located in Vesterbro.

In addition, some SATS centers have English speaking yoga instructors. And one can always join the yoga class or any type of class at sport centers, just let the instructor know that you are not a native speaker and they'll help you if you cannot follow :)

Hej Stephen and other tennis players,

There are various tennis clubs in Cph, prices are lower if you are a member, but one may also reserve a court as a guest. I think the best is to visit any tennis center first because then you may also inquire possible groups to join in or to ask about coaches. Web-sites are in Danish, but do not let it discourage because they all speak English :)

I'm a member at KB-tennis. They have indoor and outdoor courts at Pile Allé (next Frederiksberg have & zoo) og at Peter Bangs Vej (KB-hallen). Phone number is 36302300.

Then there is HIK in Hellerup. For women, LINK (Ladies International Network Koebenhavn) also have their tennis sub-group at this club.

I hope these are helpful!
Hi Stephen, I joined the Dansk Studenters Roclub in Swanemoellen. Nice club, many different people and they have an English webside (http://www.dsr-online.dk/Forside.asp?Action=3&app=10&Showpi...) They row in "Danish" but have the translation of the commants as download on their webside (www.dsr-online.dk)....still a bit difficult to get in touch with the people....but it is great to row on the Oeresund ;-)

Cheers Isabelle
hi there, i play tennis. i agree with Kirsi it is always better to join the club an di will be joining KB tennis soon. maybe we can play there.
I've come across a number of ex-pats and international students joining the domestic field hockey league in denmark. While ice hockey would be the dominant sport here, field hockey is gaining momentum.

Women's teams spread from Odense to Copenhagen, while there is also a men's team as far afield as Aarhus. The junior section in all clubs is booming, with my own club in Odense recently starting a section for three-year-olds!

Leagues and tournaments are run throughout the year, with the winter season featuring indoor hockey, before moving to astro turf for the summer season.

I found it a great way to meet some Danes and also practice my Danish. All the clubs are used to welcoming foreign players so don't worry if your language skills are rusty.

Unfortunately the Danish Hockey Union website doesn't have an English version as yet, but all club contacts are listed under http://www.landhockey.dk/?pageID=49.

Hope it's of some interest to other ex-pats
If anyone's interested in playing netball, try www.netball.dk for information about Copenhagen Netball Club. It's a social, mixed club that plays indoors (!) and welcomes netballers from around the globe. Our unofficial club language is English, but we have a number of Danish members too. If you're not in Copenhagen, then stay posted because we've heard that netball clubs will also be starting up in other areas of Denmark soon...

Mandy
Does anyone know of any expat rugby clubs in or around the copenhagen area? Thanks
Hi Ben,

You can try Exiles. The contact is a guy called Brendon. You would be able to get his details from the staff at the Southern Cross bar or The globe. If i find his details i will post them for you.

Paul
Mens and womens lacrosse is growing here. We started in 1998 with one club. Now I think there are 6-7 in Denmark and at least 4 in the Greater-Copenhagen region. Parctice and competition is on a year-round basis. If you are a player or fromer player, or just want to learn this great game contact the following people at Copenhagen Lacrosse Club (There is also a web site with the same name):

Men:
Bo Bennekov (player coach)
Telefon: 26830483
E-mail: coach@copenhagenlacrosse.com

Women:
Nanna Baszkiewicz
Telefon: 21277868
E-mail: nbasz@yahoo.com

This is a fun group of people with an international flavor. Players are from all over Skandinavia, other EU countries, and the US.
