Why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a parade in Copenhagen?
With a nation follows a particular culture or cultures. The national day of Ireland is a very suitable day to indulge in Ireland’s rich culture, including guest from Ireland and the forms Irish culture has taken in Denmark, through artists, musicians, dancers, writers and actors and people who enjoy the Irish social culture. Numerous larger cities in the world celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a parade. Although this tradition was started by Irish immigrants in America, Irish culture has great appeal to many non-Irish and is now appreciated by Irish and non-Irish alike. Why not join the tradition and bring this festive celebration to the streets of Copenhagen?
Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day
Copenhagen St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a way for everyone to join in the celebration of Irelands National Day. Sharing our different cultures is one of the ways we can get to know each other better and appreciate similarities and differences. Copenhagen St. Patrick’s Day Parade introduces Irish culture to people who have not known it before. It gives Irish immigrants a chance to meet up and celebrate their national day with friends and family and it lets people of all nationalities who already know and enjoy Irish culture and music to join in the celebration as official performers or participants in the parade.
Performance groups can sign up to perform in the parade. They do not have to be Irish or perform with Irish music and dance but some form of cultural exchange with the Irish culture must take place in their artistic expression.
Individuals and families that would like to take part and walk in the parade are very welcome all that is required is that you must wear something green and follow the guidelines.

Entertainment on Rådhuspladsen
The weather on March 17th can sometimes be cold and dull so to warm up for the Parade and get into the right festive atmosphere, there is a range of performance from the stage on Rådhuspladsen. Some of the official participants of the parade perform music and Irish dancing. A céilí mór (which means a “big party dance” in Irish) will be taught on Rådhuspladsen, all are invited to participate; a good way to keep warm. Enjoy an Irish coffee from the Tullamore Dew Irish Coffee tent kr. 30,- . Children can have a special St. Patrick’s Day face paint done. The Parade is officially opened by the Irish Ambassador Joe Hayes.

Two cultural exports of Ireland have made a great impact on mainstream culture Denmark. One is Riverdance and the other is the movie The Commitments.
Copenhagen St. Patrick’s Day Parade would like to bring this ultimate party-atmosphere of The Commitments back to Copenhagen on this special day.
As well as the now traditional After Party for all ages at 6 pm straight after the parade it is possible to dance and party to the music of The Stars From The Commitments at a great concert in Pumpehuset at 8 pm. The two events will be next door to each other and have a separate entrance fee.
The music is soul music with classic hits like:
Try A Little Tenderness
Take Me To The River
In The Midnight Hour
Chain Of Fools
Mustang Sally Treat Her Right
Hard To Handle
Nowhere To Run
Destination Anywhere
Dark End Of The Street
Plus many more all time soul classics from Dublin's saviours of soul.
